Curcumin and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ( COPD )

Herein, my main goal is to share information about Curcumin (Curcuma longa) , the active ingredient extracted from the herb turmeric, a root related to ginger, as well as explore peer review articles and share those links here, which I suggest you perform your own due diligence and read thoroughly yourself to have the most informed and well rounded view of this information.

I neither advocate or do not support the use of Curcumin as a possible treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which from here forward I will simnply refer to as COPD, but rather I am conducting research and studying the possibility that perhaps it may be a useful treatment that certainly should be explored and scientifically studied more. I will also include personal testimony, if I should find it concerning oters experience with this herb.

For a thorough understanding of COPD in layman's terms, please go to this site and read te material in its entirety, as you will become more educated oin those specific aspects, all of the information included herein will simply be more easily absorbed leaving an idelible impression permanently with you.

As with any herb, as I always share, you MUST always consult with your doctor and consider the possibility of drug interactions, meaning if you are currently on other medications, you simply want to insure that you are not going to experience the introduction of this herb, or any another medication, into your current regime. I cannot stress this strongly enough. What I have always found works best, as more and more doctors here in the United States for example, are starting to become open minded to utilizing the plethora of herbs available as either sole treatment or alongside modern pharmaceutical molecules we generally refer to as "drugs".

Here are further very important details and suggestions that must be considered very seriously before using this specific herb.

"Don't use turmeric if you have gallstones or bile duct dysfunction. Pregnant women shouldn't use it without their doctors' approval. In rare cases, extended use can cause stomach upset or heartburn. (Note that piperine can slow the elimination of some prescription drugs including phenytoin [Dilantin], propranolol [Inderal], and theophylline. Some evidence also suggests that curcumin can interfere with a chemotherapy agent used to treat breast cancer, so if you're being treated for this disease, be sure to discuss the advisability of taking curcumin with your physician.
Andrew Weil, M.D."

To further illustrate an example specific to Curcumin, it is indeed a fact that Curcumin is a blood thinner, so if tyou are already on a bloof thinner such as the very common Coumadin, you may not want to use both of these together, or may have your doctor reccommend that the medication is decreased or not taken at all, should the Curcumin prove effective. Ultimately we are analyzing the pros and cons and making a decision about our own physical health, and the absolute possibility of death in the worst case scenario if we choos to make a poor decision and this is why exercising your own due diligence is essential to making a well informed decison about how you plan on moving forward.

I will also always include at least one link that is meant to be a footnote essentially, that will be an article from a reliable and trusted source that you may independently go to and read even more about the stated fact and other  facts on the topics being discussed herein. As we open a link, we are opening a door to another room of information. I want this blog to be utilized so that you may have a guide that neccesitates an easy and fluid transition for both your thoughts and your studying as you move forward garnering this knowledge as you start to form your own personal opinion as well as have a valuable resource in one place where you can easily make a copy or share this link and be able to communicate this very valuable information with othersm nost especially those suffering and your personal health care professionals. The topic here is specific to COPD, however what you will find about Curcumin is simply amazingm and any herbalist will tell you if they had to choose only on herb to treat a multide of symptopms / diseases, they would always choose Curcumin.

I will also stress that the most imprtant part of any medication is proper absorption so that the body may utilize these molecules / compounds both effectively and efficiently, so pertaining specifically to Curcumin, it has been well noted that regular store bought balck pepper which contains the ingredient peperine is essential to take along side each and every dosage so that the body will indeed properly utilize this. Otherwise your money is going to buy Curcumin, again the active ingredient from turmeric, now fully extracted and concentrated into a capsule for your easy consumption and not consuming it with black pepper would be like taking that capsule opening it up and dumping it into the toilet and then closing the capsule and taking it empty. So seriously cvonsider that and athen consider that as we explore this we are going to try to discover the exact amount, or a suitable amount at worst, of common black pepper that may be consumed alongside your daily dosage(s) of Curcumin.

An early point of contention on this entire study is the opposing views of consuming turmeric in whole compared to taking Curcumin as the extract.

In many situations chemically, exactly like the possibility of drug interctions, turmeric as a whole root has curcumin as one ingredient of the plant in its entirety. Many doctors, scientists, and laymen alike believe that you will have a better benefit of taking turmeric whole (which may still be dried and ground into a fine powder to place within capsulesm make infusions, ad infinitum) because there is often a process called ......... which basically means that the compound (two or more molecules)  when aken in full, meaning all of the molecules that actually bond together to make tghe entire plants which we can refer to as components, share a synergy...

I want to define this word, as it is a powerful word that illustartes a key facet to painting a clear picture of this entire idea. When so done, I will pick up where I left off with more pensive dots (...) to transition back into that thought easily as to not disrupt the overall flow.

As with any supplement, I can not stress strongly enough that you make all of your purchases from a reliable source, as this is a huge multi-billion doallr industry wrought with fraud, even from and / or by unsuspecting retailers often selling these supplemets that they have obtained from fraudulent compainies selling fake supplements all together of often selling supplements with only a very little percentage of the actual active ingredient that is so essential in the overall treatment that is desired to be gained from the supplement itself, and if that is the case, you are certainly never going to know the actual benefits as desired from such poor quality materials. Here is a recent story that further illustrates that all too often reality today, so again, know your source of supplements is relaible and reqad your lables and perform all your other due diligence every single step pof the way please, as it is only to your benefit healthfully as well as financially. This is an absolute must read brief article and I will quote one paragraph below followed by the article's link in its entirety.

" “Contamination, substitution and falsely labeling herbal products constitute deceptive business practices and, more importantly, present considerable health risks for consumers,” said the letters, first reported today by the New York Times."

Lastly, as this will be an evolving study, I may add or site new sources as they become avilable and when those are added after the original date of publication, I will makes sure that it is clearly noted within this paper to not confuse any issues of importance.

Etymology: Gk, syn + ergein, to work
1 the process in which two organs, substances, or agents work simultaneously to enhance the function and effect of one another.
2 the coordinated action of a set of muscles that work together to produce a specific movement, as in a reflex action.
3 a combined action of different parts of the autonomic nervous system, as in the sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation of secreting cells of the salivary glands, with both systems having a secretory effect.
4 the interaction of two or more drugs to produce a certain effect, as in the exaggerated response to tyramine in a person who is treated with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Also called synergism
Here is a quote from a website from / by the very world reknowned and trusted as well as reputable Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D.
"I frequently recommend turmeric supplements, and I believe whole turmeric is more effective than isolated curcumin for inflammatory disorders, including arthritis, tendonitis, and autoimmune conditions. Take 400 to 600 milligrams of turmeric extracts (available in tablets or capsules) three times per day or as directed on the product label. Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Neither curcumin nor turmeric taken orally is well absorbed unless taken with black pepper or piperine, a constituent of black pepper responsible for its pungency. When shopping for supplements, make sure that the one you choose contains black pepper extract or piperine. (If you're cooking with turmeric, be sure to add some black pepper to the food.). Be patient when taking turmeric supplements: the full benefits may not be apparent for eight weeks."

My hypothesis is that concerning Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Curcumin itself as a very powerful anti-inflamatory proven more effective then common drugs such as ibuprofen and tylenol as examples, may very well indeed help lessen or at least partially disrupt the inflamatory process itself and help to ease symptoms of this disease. Further personal speculation frommy research leads me to believe another worthy avenue of consideration is that Curcumin may also prove effective at perhaps ceasing the progession of the disease or even reverse the disease itself, if the proper regimne is determined for the subject and the subject is also absatining from any habits or precluding themselves from environments that are indeed not conducive for better lung health in general.

It may indeed be that this hypothesis is neither original or unexplored at this point, but as I have never read about it, spoken to anpother baout it as a possibility, nor found any otyher sources about it specifically, I am exploring it to find out if indeed it may be a unique thought.

When studying COPD, we learn that the mechanical effect of COPD is

Furthermore, we want to keep an open mind, as new research is always being conducted, and think through the major causes of COPD. Most recently there are exciting new studies that suggest there is a stronger possibility that this is indeed an auto-immune disease. If you do not understand auto-immune diseases in general please read this link.

Turmeric and Curcumin has been extensively studied as well and there are also new and exciting studies underway this very day that further uncover the amazing properties offeref by this powerful herb. It has been suggested that it is powerful to comabt auto-immune disorders, and further understandimg of the disease itself combined with further understanding of this herb can help to bridge the gap that is diagnosis to effective treatment.

You may ask, "What is an auto-immune disease?", so you may thoroughly study the umbrella or broad definition here:

Here is a link that is a recent study suggesting COPD is perhaps an auto-immune disease in nature, or at the very least certainly appears to have a component suggesting this fact now. Here is a quote from the link below. It is, again very important to thoroughly read all of the material at these links so that you will have amore thorough understanding of this disease. This may not be an easy task, and is indeed time consuming and a real exercise for the individuals mind. The following quote has footnotes and those can be further researcjed at the link included immediately following this exercise in reseqarch.

"Immune mechanisms are central to the pathogenesis of COPD, with contributions of both innate and adaptive immunity 314, and the possible involvement of autoimmunity in COPD has been increasingly recognized 15. An association of lung pathology with a variety of well-characterized autoimmune diseases is evident 16,17, and cigarette smoking is a risk factor for several recognized autoimmune diseases 18. Antibodies specific to a variety of autoantigens have been described in pulmonary fibrosis 1921. Animal experiments demonstrate that COPD-like pathology can be generated by autoimmune mechanisms 22."

Also from that same link...

" More direct evidence for autoimmunity in COPD patients is provided by reports of autoantibodies (AAb) and T cells specific for elastin 23,24, although other studies were unable to confirm this 2528. Antibodies to cytokeratin-18 have also been reported in COPD 29 and in non-allergic asthma 30. It has also been proposed that a broad range of tissue components may serve as autoantigens in COPD, thereby giving rise to a variety of AAb whose production differs between patients 25. This concept is supported by the demonstration, in differing proportions of COPD patients, of AAb to pulmonary and other tissues 31,32 including endothelium 33, carbonyl-modified proteins 34 and a broad range of tissue-specific and systemic autoantigens 35,36."

Curcumin / Tuermeric is effective at fighting auto-immune disease, and it is important to both emphasize that fact as well as further link the two concepts together that 1) COPD is, or at least has a factor of, being an auto-immune disease, which until recently was NOT recognized, and 2) The fact that it appears that Turmeric / Curcumin is indeed helpful at fighting against auto-immune diseases for very specific reason pertaining to the exacting mechanics of the molecule(s) and how they interact within the body itself.

Curcumin / Turmeric is also extremely effective at fighting cancer, and it is a fact that COPD can indeed be a precursor to lung cancer, which we will also further explore and study the mechanisms thereof as well as why Curcumin / Turmeric may prove such an effective treatment.

" Over the last 30years, epidemiological studies have shown that COPD is the single most important risk factor for lung cancer after smoking exposure. Recent genetic studies using genome-wide approaches suggest that the genetic risk factors predisposing smokers to COPD and lung cancer may overlap. The genes identified by these studies suggest that this overlapping genetic susceptibility may be mediated through receptors expressed on the bronchial epithelium that implicate molecular pathways underlying both COPD and lung cancer. Furthermore, it appears that aberrant inflammatory and/or immune-modulatory pathways leading to excess matrix metalloproteinases, growth factors and airway remodelling in COPD may also be promoting malignant transformation of the bronchial epithelium. The process linking inflammation, remodelling and cancer formation is called epithelial-mesenchymal transition. There are several clinical implications arising from the COPD-lung cancer overlap. First, if COPD is a precursor disease to lung cancer then efforts to prevent COPD, might be even more important. Second, if drugs targeting the overlapping molecular pathways can be identified, chemoprevention that reduce the propensity to COPD and lung cancer is an attractive option. Finally, if low-dose computerized tomography can identify treatable lung cancer, gene-based tests of susceptibility might help identify those smokers who should undergo radiological screening."

My intentions here are simply to research the internet and find reliable peer reviewed scientific studies I can offer as evidence either to support ot negate my hypothesis. Again these links will bring you to, often extensive, studies that are full of information to read, absorb, contemplate, assimilate and utilize in making your personal future decisions about the treatment for your diease, COPD.

I will do my best to 1) either show direct evidence of the effectiveness of this treatment utilizing this herb specifically for COPD, and / or 2) link several different studies together to further support my hypothesis for the actual possibility of the proposed envisioned treatment regimen that I suggest herein.

You may also well understand after this research that COPD as it is currently understood and treated today is a progressive disease, which means by today's current standars, even with smoking cessation for smoking induced COPD (not the only known causation for COPD), the disease is still progressive, meaning over a period of time it is only going to become worse. In this hypothesis as stated, and with any disease in particular for that matter, the goal is to either make the symptom(s) of the disease more easily tolerable (aleviate) for the sufferer, which I will from here forward refer to as to patient, or to completely remove the symptom(s) from the patient, or at the very best, of course, find a treatment that  reverses the disease and nurtures, or helps to promote, the body back to health, thus curing the disease.

" Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), involving chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is characterized by progressive airflow limitation that is not fully reversible; it is a major and increasing cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide 1,2. Although tobacco smoke is the major aetiological factor, only 15–20% of smokers develop clinically significant COPD but, once disease is established, it is progressive, regardless of smoking cessation."

In western medicine, there has been a very long history of  professionally both recognizing and utilizing only pharmaceutical medications, most often synthetic in nature, and all too often these treatments leave the patient experiencing a plethora of side-effects, and in the worst case scenario, the side effects in the long term range may be more detrimental to the overall health of the patient while offering relief to a degree in the short term range, and this is a factor that also must always be researched, contemplated, and decided upon, as it is important to be able to maintain, very hopefully, a better quality of life with longevity, and the fact of the matter understnding that objectively is the very fact that we all too often, in out western society, accept that the pharmaceutical approach, philosophy, and practice of medicine here at home is the only treatment available.

More and more today we, in a relatively young culture comparitively, are embracing what cultures thousands of years old today have known for centuries... think about the depth of that a moment if you consider a timeline in your mind's eye...  these eatern cultures practicing there medicine philosophically different, often based more upon (in considerations about tratment of disease) positive response from patients then our modern day science, at least as it is most often portrayed, not to say that they do not have any science at all supporting their respective treatmensts,
but to say there is often a greater emphasis on common sense type practices based on previous countless years of outcomes utilizing these practices  amd foinally more and more everyday these practices are becoming embedded or better embrtaced in western medicine with more and more doctors considering this research.

On particular aspect to recognize is that there is a huge pharmaceutical industry that is a multi-billion doallr a year enterprise and for a doctor to prescribe certain medications, they canmake more money as well as 'big pharma" as it is often referred too. That should not dis-credit that aspoect nesscarily, however it is a consideration that has to be understood whole heartedly and weighed against the ise of utilizing proven powerful herbs with scientific research to substantiate their effectiveness alongside personal testimony and perhaps one of the best considerations is the, often, lack of any side effects at all which is common, or the lack of severe side effects in general concerning these herbs in general. Of course some have side effects and the patient versus another patient with the same conditions being treated with the same herbs may experience different side effetcs and different outcomes as well. These considerations can be overwhelming to say the least, and that seems an understanement when considering life and longevity and quality of life type issues, but that is indeed the ultimate questions in hand.

I have my own personal testimony concerning my own success with Curcumin / Turmeric, as well as other powerful herbs for other conditions which I was able to use with great success, however is is not in regards to this specific disease of COPD or lung cancer, but rather spinal stenosis and inflamation, and I have since found a big pharma drug "Lyrica" that indeed looks more promising in respects to pain, however I will continue to utilize Curcumin / Turmeric as well as it has also proven very effective against my personal conditions and I thoroughly believe and promote as an advocate, the promise this herb shows in so many respects concerning so many different conditions / diseases, as well as touting it as perhaps a powerful preventitive maintenance herb that is proven to help slow aging and prevent other diseases and/or lessen the prevalence, as is often discoverd in nations that have utilized this hern in particularly in their diet, such as India.

To expound on this excellent example of an older culture that eats a ton of turmeric and has the least likliehood of Alzheimers in the entire world for example, and perhaps explaing why, is India, and I find these statistics and research exciting and promisong in other aspects as well because of the very mechanisms at work concerning this powerful herb.

" Population studies have shown that elderly villagers in India appear to have the lowest rate of Alzheimer's disease in the world, and researchers have speculated that the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin may be partly responsible. (Alzheimer's begins as an inflammatory process in the brain, and Indians eat turmeric with almost every meal). So far, however, I've seen no evidence of benefit from curcumin supplementation in Alzheimer's patients."

Treading backwards a moment, I had a "growth" under my right arm in the arm pit. An axillary biopsy was performed and what was discovered was a necrotizong granuloma. Necrotizing has a Greek root word "necro" meaning death. I was told by my doctors to have a biopsy for this growyh immediately, as i told the I had a list of specific symptms I shared with them and thought perhaps I had cancer. Fortunately my blood work came back fine for the moment, however hving undergone other extensive sophisticated surgeries in the past, ny gut feeling said to NOT havethe biopsy as I felt to weak to endure any such procedure and so I decided to wait as I researched herbs. I studied a lot and narrowed down the specific herbs I wanted to utilize and for very specific reasons that I will not get ito deeply here as to stay on point. I chose Echinacea and Goldenseal in combination in a capsule form. I set my regimine of bombardment style dosages I catered to myself and my specific concern and then my purgeing of toxins through abstinence for a period of time from these compounds (herbs) and then I would cycle through that same exact repoitoire again. The huge growth, slightly larger then a golf ball which had been growing rapidly and was very painful, begin to shrink gradually. I stayed the course and watched the progression and monitored my symptoms. Once it shrunk to a small size and then ceased to shrink any longer and I generally fely better overall in these regards, I was finished, I was stronger, and as well over a year had passed, I finally did have the biopsy, which ewas more then a biopsy as I had a large cluster of lymph nodes removed that this growth had damaged. The best thing was that whatever it was was a dead mass of tissue. I feel positive it was cancer, but we will never know now, however my estimony was I trusted my gut and did my due diligence and stuck to the plan I had orchestarted and had excellent results, other then the subsequent nerve damage from surgery, which would have oly been worse had I let the operation transpire when I was first suggested to have it.

So, you think I am playng Russian Roulette?... well, in part I cannot blame you, but do we ever truly know we are not doing the same thing when a doctor suggests any drug, treatment, surgery, etc. I trust myself and my intellect as well as my follow through with due diligence and most importantly I listen to my body and no it likeno other human being possibly can because of course this is the vessle to my soul, it s the home I inhabit as I live the human experience.

Here is another personal story and testimomy that I cannot prove solved my diseasem but I think the linkage of the two from experience and my due diligence speaks volumes and no other previous treatment, like medications did anythign at all helpful.

I decided to treat my spinal stenosis and other severe spinal column conditions with Curcumin. I had also had a well over 10+ year history of an enlarged heart and arrhymia. Well, I responded well  to the Curcumin regimine I taylored for myself and regained a lot of mobility because I was in less pain. My spine was offered quite a bit of comfort and responded by screaming out through the nerves in pain far less often. Curcumin is powerful !...and I still take it today for this specific reason as well as so many others. Years later after starting and maintaining this regimine still today, I had a lung X-Ray to make sure I did not have pneumonia and I was informed that my heart was again normal in size. My arrhymia has more recently completly disappeared as well. Coincidence ? I think not personally, but canI prove it to you scientifically?...medically? No, but what I can do, and have done, is my research and found that it is highly likely and even probable to have alleviated these symptoms and restored my heart's health. The body is a resilient complicated machine, and with the proper treatments and fuel (food) alongside exercise, it wants to respond healthily if we promote it and let it heal. It also takes that exact mindset as well, as there is no substitute for positive thinking, and that is a proven fact today as well, no matter what you want to call it, as many call it the will to live. When I took my medication for these heart issues, I had no positive response, and at that time I was on a toal of fourteen different medications and after taking them I would sleep very often a full cycle once again and only awake to do the same. Those medications did not help this man's heart I am here to say. They further stold my quality of life and precious time. I am not trying to make anyone throw away their medication and disregard their specialists. I would never be so irresponsible with regards to another's valued life. These were questions I needed to consider and answers I had to formulate for myself, or accept my miserable life as it was. I am healing still, it is a long process, but it is one you can help along greatly all by yourself with knowledge through education. I could speculate that I had a virus or bacteria (nothing was ever detected and I was never offered any logocal explanation either) causing these heart issues, snf I could further speculate that because Curcumin helps the body maintain a more normal or neutral pH, that I was not a decent host for these pathogens anymore, and therefore they died off and that thebetter fuel I was eating that was fortifying my body was able to heal, as the body often very easily does when just offered even the slimmest of chances.

The fact of the matter is that everything I stated above is absolutely 100% true in every respect and today I am healthier then I have beenin over 20+ years and I am on only three regular madications and Curcumin and my vitality has returned slowly but strongly, as well as my libido, and my stamina. My life is coming full circle to the days of my youth and I have nothing else I can credit it to other then the things I have outlined, which are positive thought (for me often through prayer, but no matter what positive thought is a factor to gain), research and experience, and Curcumin, all of which only makes me explore this herb deeper and deeper and often reading the latest research I can find about it. It is perhaps teh most multi-faceted compound I have ever studied with so much promise in so many disieases or the ability to treat myriad symptoms that it is just astounding.

So, I have a friend suffering from COPD and I am thinking that Curcumin / Turmeric (I also cook with turmeric and sprinkle it on food regularly as well as drink infusions) may at the very least prove to be beneficial to him and hope that he will read that which I have compiled here, discuss it with his doctor, and do his own due diligence and perhaps if hus "gut" says so explore this avenue of treatment whch I have found has me healthier in so many wasy, not to even mention what it can possibly be preventing to start with as such a proven and powerful active ingredient against free radicals which are proven to be a huge factor in the formation of cancer.

What are free radicals you may ask ?

"Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants."

How does Curcumin / Turmeric help to fight against these?

"Free radicals play a main pathogenic role in several human diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, and cancer. Although there has been progress in treatment of these diseases, the development of important side effects may complicate the therapeutic course. Curcumin, a well known spice commonly used in India to make foods colored and flavored, is also used in traditional medicine to treat mild or moderate human diseases. In the recent years, a growing body of literature has unraveled the antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, and antinfectious activity of curcumin based on the ability of this compound to regulate a number of cellular signal transduction pathways. These promising data obtained in vitro are now being translated to the clinic and more than ten clinical trials are currently ongoing worldwide. This review outlines the biological activities of curcumin and discusses its potential use in the prevention and treatment of human diseases."

There is a lot to consider here and a huge volume of data to study and absorbm however if you have come along for the ride herin thus far, you will start to see how easy it is to connect different pieces of information together and undertsnad the powerful herb Curcumin / Turmeric and see that it indeed has promoise as a super effective treatment for a plethora of diseases and conditions as well as being utilized as a great preventitive measure against further degeneration of total prevention in the best case scenario of many conditions and diseases.

So now we will examine te specificmechanics of COPD to he best of my ability and outlibne or illustrate in steps why Curcumin / Turmeric could be such an effective treatment for this disease as well as the case for it being such a great treatment for hopefully the further prevention of lung cancer, a disiease many COPD sufferers develop later, but not all of course.

VERY IMPORTANT - The process linking inflammation, remodelling and cancer formation is called epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

COPD is indeed a precursor to some individuals tha develope lung cancer and that is a serious threat to consider, and i will share the positive reasons and mechanics as to why Curcumin / Turmeric can be effective in this fight or possible prevention of this disease.

This is a very major study from one of the most reputable centers to fight small lung cancer, Sloan Kettering,

This is a fascinating study onmice that explains the exact mechanisms of COPD and Curcumin administered treatments.

"Curcumin (1,7-bis (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3, 5-dione) is a naturally occurring polyphenolic phytochemical isolated from the rhizome of the medicinal plant Curcuma longa (turmeric) (21). It is commonly used as a spice, food additive or dietary pigment. It has been shown that curcumin has several pharmacologic effects including anti-inflammatory (2226), antioxidant (27,28), anti-tumoral (2934) and wound healing activities (35,36). There are only limited and contradictory data available on the effects of curcumin on lung inflammation and tumor promotion (3739). In this study, we report that dietary administration of curcumin effectively suppresses NTHi-induced COPD-like airway inflammation and lung cancer progression in mice."

Further promising studies and other potential herbal treatments...

A recent study published by the National Institute of Health (NIH) reported that curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, has a wide variety of benefits for people suffering with lung disease. Namely, the herb can help prevent and modulate inflammation in the airways, and it can help manage stress that is induced by a lack of oxygen in the body. Although turmeric is an herb commonly used in southern Asia, it is widely available in the United States as well.

Is there a possibility that Curcumin or Turmeric may be aerosolized for use with a rescue inhaler

-would this make for an even more effective proposed treatement for COPD ?

Great word to utilize -

Definition of Aetiology. Aetiology: The study of the causes. For example, of a disorder. The word "aetiology" is mainly used in medicine, where it is the science that deals with the causes or origin of disease, the factors which produce or predispose toward a certain disease or disorder.
