The expression for the reaction quotient, Q, looks like that used to calculate an equilibrium constant but Q can be calculated for any set of conditions, not just for equilibrium. Q can be used to determine which direction a reaction will shift to reach equilibrium.

There are other definitions of Q in mathematics and they are equally relevant when performing calculations and are critically important to understand as well in consideration of their application, however most often we are still looking at cause and effect relationships and analyzing those cause and effect relationships to better understand their interactions and what can be done in order to restore equilibrium, if that is the so desired effect.
