ROUND & READY
An Open-Source Food Product Concept for Thin, Round Sandwich Breads, Tortilla Bases, and Cheese-Backed Slices
One Shape. Many Breads. More Filling. Less Bread.
October 24, 2026
Project Overview
ROUND & READY is an open-source food product concept designed to rethink the proportions of conventional sandwiches, hamburgers, and other handheld foods.
The central idea is simple: bread should support the food, not dominate it.
Many conventional hamburger buns, sandwich rolls, and wraps contribute substantially more bread than some consumers want. A person ordering a hamburger may primarily want to enjoy the meat, cheese, vegetables, condiments, and other toppings—not consume a thick bun that overwhelms the filling.
ROUND & READY proposes a family of thin, structurally supportive, predominantly round bread and tortilla products designed to complement existing foods without unnecessarily increasing their bulk.
The concept includes two principal product categories:
- Standalone thin-sliced round breads and tortillas, sized to work with conventional hamburger patties and commercially available round cheese slices.
- Preassembled bread-backed or tortilla-backed cheese slices, combining a thin supporting layer with cheese in one convenient, ready-to-use product.
Manufacturers are encouraged to develop either category independently or offer both.
The concept is intended for open development, adaptation, manufacturing, and commercial use.
1. The Fundamental Design Principle
ROUND & READY begins with five requirements:
- Thin: Bread should be approximately ⅛ inch thick where practical, with adjustments for different bread types.
- Supportive: Despite its thinness, the bread should have sufficient density and integrity to hold typical sandwich fillings.
- Round: Hamburger-sized products should be circular, matching the general geometry of hamburger patties and round cheese slices rather than forcing square bread onto round fillings.
- Versatile: The same products should work with hamburgers, cold sandwiches, breakfast foods, appetizers, and miniature pizzas.
- Convenient: Products should require little or no cutting, shaping, or additional preparation.
The goal is not necessarily to eliminate carbohydrates, replace bread with artificial substitutes, or market another restrictive diet product.
The goal is to offer less bread without giving up the usefulness, texture, or flavor of bread.
2. Product Family A: Thin-Sliced Round Bread
This product consists of small-diameter round loaves or individual round bread slices, manufactured specifically for sandwiches and other handheld foods.
An existing point of inspiration is traditional miniature cocktail bread, such as the small, thin, relatively dense loaves commonly served with hors d'oeuvres.
That style of bread demonstrates how a thin slice can remain supportive without requiring the thickness of a conventional sandwich bun.
ROUND & READY would adapt this principle to standardized diameters compatible with common hamburger patties and cheese slices.
Proposed bread varieties include:
- White bread
- Whole wheat
- Multigrain
- Rye
- Cocktail rye
- Pumpernickel
- Sourdough
- Potato bread
- Italian bread
- French-style bread
- Other regional, artisanal, and specialty breads
Manufacturers could sell these products as small, presliced cylindrical loaves, individually separated rounds, or convenient resealable stacks.
A manufacturer might offer several diameters, including approximately 3-, 4-, and 5-inch rounds, allowing consumers to select an appropriate size for their preferred fillings.
The intended thickness would generally be around ⅛ inch, although some recipes may require slight variation to preserve structural integrity.
3. Product Family B: Hamburger-Sized Tortilla Rounds
This category applies the same design philosophy to flour and corn tortillas.
Conventional tortillas are frequently designed for wrapping, folding, or enclosing large quantities of food.
ROUND & READY proposes a different application: a tortilla that functions as a thin sandwich base rather than an oversized wrap.
These tortillas would be manufactured in small circular sizes suitable for conventional hamburger patties, cheese slices, and other sandwich fillings.
Available varieties could include:
- Traditional flour tortillas
- Traditional corn tortillas
- Whole wheat tortillas
- Multigrain tortillas
- Specialty grain tortillas
- Other regional tortilla varieties
These products could be used individually, as top-and-bottom sandwich layers, or lightly toasted for additional strength.
Their small diameter would eliminate the need to fold excessive tortilla material around the food.
Consumers would enjoy the flavor and convenience of a tortilla while retaining the familiar handheld experience of eating a hamburger or sandwich.
4. Product Family C: Bread-Backed Cheese Slices
One of the project's principal convenience innovations is the combination of a thin round bread slice and a matching round cheese slice into a single ready-to-use product.
Instead of purchasing bread and cheese separately, consumers could select a package containing preassembled bread-and-cheese rounds.
Each unit would consist of:
- One thin, structurally supportive round bread slice
- One compatible round cheese slice
- A suitable method of keeping the two components together during handling and packaging
These units could be stacked with appropriate separation materials or packaged individually.
The consumer could remove one unit and place it directly onto a hamburger, breakfast sandwich, deli sandwich, or other food.
Two units could form the upper and lower portions of a sandwich.
Potential cheese varieties include:
- Cheddar
- Sharp cheddar
- American
- Swiss
- Provolone
- Mozzarella
- Monterey Jack
- Pepper Jack
- Colby
- Colby Jack
- Gouda
- Other suitable sliced cheeses
Manufacturers could offer different bread-and-cheese combinations.
Examples include rye with Swiss, sourdough with sharp cheddar, pumpernickel with provolone, or wheat bread with Colby Jack.
This approach would provide convenience without requiring consumers to accept a single standardized bread or cheese flavor.
5. Product Family D: Tortilla-Backed Cheese Slices
The same convenience principle can be applied to tortilla rounds.
Each unit would combine a small, thin flour or corn tortilla with a compatible round cheese slice.
These products could be especially useful for hamburgers, breakfast sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, quick snacks, and other foods where consumers want minimal bread or tortilla material.
Tortilla-backed cheese slices could also be lightly toasted or heated to produce a crisp exterior and melted cheese interior.
The tortilla would supply structural support while the cheese contributed flavor and richness.
6. Compatibility With Existing Cheese Products
ROUND & READY does not require manufacturers to produce bread and cheese together.
An important part of the project is encouraging independent bread manufacturers to produce thin round breads and tortillas compatible with the round presliced cheeses already sold in supermarkets.
Consumers should be able to purchase their preferred brand and variety of sliced cheese and pair it with a separately purchased ROUND & READY bread or tortilla product.
This compatibility would allow existing bakeries, tortilla manufacturers, dairies, cheese producers, and grocery brands to participate without fundamentally changing their existing product lines.
Standardized dimensions could also encourage cooperation among independent manufacturers.
The round shape is a deliberate design priority.
A round hamburger should not require square bread simply because conventional sandwich bread happens to be square.
7. Applications Beyond Hamburgers
Although hamburgers inspired the concept, ROUND & READY is intended as a versatile foundation for nearly every category of sandwich and many other foods.
Hamburgers and hot sandwiches: Beef burgers, turkey burgers, chicken sandwiches, grilled ham and cheese, roast beef, pastrami, and other hot fillings.
Cold sandwiches: Turkey, ham, roast beef, cheese, tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, vegetables, and other deli combinations.
Breakfast sandwiches: Eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, cheese, and combinations of breakfast ingredients.
Miniature pizzas: Thin bread or tortilla rounds topped with sauce, mozzarella, vegetables, meats, and other pizza toppings. The products could provide a convenient foundation for small, individually customized pizzas.
Appetizers and hors d'oeuvres: Small open-faced sandwiches, toasted cheese rounds, miniature melts, and party foods.
Picnics, travel, and outdoor recreation: Convenient sandwich components that occupy less space and require less assembly than conventional bread products.
Children's meals and smaller portions: Appropriately sized sandwiches that allow consumers to adjust portions without relying on oversized buns or rolls.
Restaurants and food-service operations: Diners, delicatessens, cafeterias, food trucks, and sandwich shops could offer thin round bread as an alternative to traditional buns.
The same basic product could therefore serve multiple food categories without requiring a separate bread design for every application.
8. Manufacturing and Product Development
The basic concept is intentionally straightforward, but successful commercial products would require attention to several practical details.
Bread structure: Thin bread must remain sufficiently strong to support fillings without excessive tearing or crumbling. Dense cocktail-style bread provides one promising starting point.
Thickness consistency: Manufacturers should seek reliable, repeatable slicing dimensions.
Diameter compatibility: Bread, tortillas, and cheese should be offered in sizes that work together without unnecessary trimming.
Texture: Products should remain pleasant to eat whether served cold, warmed, toasted, or grilled.
Moisture management: Preassembled bread-and-cheese products require special attention to moisture migration, which could cause bread to become soggy or cheese to dry out.
Packaging: Separators, resealable packaging, or individually packaged units may improve convenience and shelf life.
Food safety: Refrigeration requirements, microbial stability, allergen labeling, and shelf-life validation must be established for each finished product.
Ingredient flexibility: Manufacturers should be free to offer conventional, organic, artisanal, or specialty ingredient formulations.
The intention is not to prescribe a single recipe or production technique but to encourage practical development around a shared product concept.
9. Retail and Food-Service Opportunities
ROUND & READY could be marketed through several familiar retail categories.
Standalone thin round breads could appear alongside conventional bread, rolls, and specialty bakery products.
Small tortilla rounds could be sold with conventional tortillas.
Preassembled bread-backed and tortilla-backed cheese slices could be refrigerated alongside existing sliced cheese products.
Restaurants could offer ROUND & READY bread as a standard alternative to conventional hamburger buns or sandwich rolls.
The product family could also support variety packs, allowing customers to try several bread types without purchasing full-sized loaves of each.
The opportunity extends beyond a single product or manufacturer because the underlying design principle can be applied across numerous bread, tortilla, and cheese varieties.
10. Open-Source Development and Participation
ROUND & READY is presented as an open-source food product concept.
The intention is to make the general design principles publicly available for manufacturers, bakeries, dairy producers, restaurants, food entrepreneurs, and independent developers to explore.
Participants are encouraged to:
- Develop thin, round bread and tortilla products.
- Experiment with bread density, texture, diameter, and thickness.
- Create bread-backed and tortilla-backed cheese products.
- Establish practical compatibility standards with existing round sliced cheeses.
- Test packaging and shelf-life solutions.
- Introduce new bread and cheese combinations.
- Share useful findings and improvements where possible.
- Manufacture and commercialize their own versions.
No single manufacturer is intended to control the overall concept.
The objective is to encourage an accessible category of food products that multiple companies can independently improve and offer to consumers.
This publication shares the concept openly and invites commercial participation. It does not itself establish a formal patent license, trademark license, or binding open-source hardware license. Manufacturers remain responsible for applicable intellectual-property considerations, regulatory compliance, and product safety.
11. The Consumer Proposition
The value of ROUND & READY is not dependent on complicated technology, artificial substitutes, or an entirely new food category.
It begins with an ordinary observation:
Many people want the sandwich filling more than they want the bread surrounding it.
They want to taste the hamburger, cheese, vegetables, meat, sauces, and other ingredients without having the entire meal dominated by thick bread.
They still want something comfortable to hold.
They still want the familiar experience of eating a sandwich.
They simply want the proportions to make sense.
ROUND & READY provides a framework for manufacturers to address that preference with straightforward, adaptable products.
Conclusion
ROUND & READY proposes a family of thin, round sandwich breads, miniature tortillas, and ready-to-use cheese-backed products that emphasize proportion, convenience, compatibility, and versatility.
The concept can be adopted by individual bakeries, established food manufacturers, dairy companies, restaurants, and independent entrepreneurs.
Some manufacturers may specialize in compatible round bread loaves. Others may develop tortilla alternatives. Still others may offer complete bread-and-cheese or tortilla-and-cheese combinations.
All can participate in a common design philosophy:
Let the meat, cheese, vegetables, and other fillings define the sandwich. Let the bread do its job without taking over the meal.
ROUND & READY — More Filling. Less Bread. Just Enough to Hold It Together.
