There was a road I never took when I was twenty-one
A little house beyond the hill, a life beneath the sun
I told myself the world was wide, there'd always be another way
I never heard the quiet sound of one door close that day
There was a girl I almost loved, a town I almost knew
A thousand things I meant to say, a thousand things to do
And every choice seemed small enough, another afternoon
Until I turned around one day and half my life was gone
Somewhere I became someone else without knowing when
The boy I was kept walking roads I never walked again
I see him sometimes through the glass, still waiting where we parted
He has my face, but not these years, and everything unstarted
And all those lives keep moving on in rooms I cannot see
The father and the wanderer, the man I meant to be
They wake beneath another sky, they sleep in other beds
While I carry their photographs inside my aging head
The doors are fewer than before, the hallway isn't long
Some choices became memories, some memories became songs
But I don't mourn the roads I took or curse the ones I crossed
You cannot live a single life without a thousand lost
So somewhere I became someone else, and somewhere so did you
We leave ourselves behind us in everything we choose
And when the final doorway comes, perhaps we'll understand
We weren't the lives we might have lived
We were the one we had.
