If you have seen the recent news coverage then you know that during these dire times while the Federal Government is on "shut-down", there is a one man crew and a few volunteers that have helped him keep the trash and debris away from the memorials of our nation's capitol.

Chris Cox is that one man crew, and believe it or not he even worked on Capitol Hill for a while more recently, before following his hearts passion for art.

He is no stranger to politics and he is no stranger to picking up the slack either.

Chris has now been featured on Fox News, The BBC, and through countless other shows and press, but what he is indeed is just a heck of a guy and a friend of mine for over 30+ years, and he is one hell of an artist.

Below are some pictures from the summer of 2013, and this is just a small example of his extraordinary talent. I took these when I visited him in Berryville, Virginia while he was hard at work, as always, on some new pieces.

I, as many mutual friends, am proud to have Chris as a friend and even more thankful that he is working hard to make a difference while setting an example I hope will be followed for generations to come.

May God Bless Chris as well as the veterans and other citizens he has worked hard for to keep our national memorials clean, and keep in mind the Veteran's march is planned for this weekend, October 13th, 2013.

Leading by example, Chris Cox has stepped up and shown us how to make a difference and "Fill the Void", and we can all do this at home and abroad, as dutiful citizens just like Chris.

Chris, I am sure I am not alone when I say, " Our hats are off to you sir!"

You have inspired a nation, and I hope many others will see another side to you and share this beautiful art work pictured below that you have crafted. This art is a beautiful window into a soul that is obviously burning with passion.

...and by the way, you have my vote when you are ready to run for office, and I am certain countless others.

Your work for Veterans in particular is personally touching to me. My very own Father is from South Carolina, is a Retired Colonel, and is a veteran of both Korea and Viet-Nam. When an authority figure speaks up and states that the veterans should just step over or around the trash...well, I naturally think of my Father at 83 with a replaced hip, and the words uttered just disgust me. I, like you, know he and countless others have done their fair share and all simply deserve better then this, and I as your friend, admire and respect your gracious gesture.

Thanks for looking out for my great Father and others like him. You are a very fine example of the "American Spirit" and the "Can Do" attitude backed by a work ethic...and we all need the lift and inspiration you have so offered as a beacon during dim times.

Memorial Militia ~ Chris Cox ~ Poem

To my friend Chris Cox...

There is a Memorial Militia,
and it is a one man show,
Chris Cox is a man of action,
working hard and always on the go.

He is a modern hero and American Patriot,
who hears his duty as it beckons and calls,
he sets a steadfast example with action,
as collectively we suffer the slings and arrows of shortfall.

A push mower, and trash bags, and a bicycle,
a chainsaw slung on his shoulder like a guitar,
a flag of South Carolina flying with honor,
with its moon and palm carried by he, the star.

He single-handedly "Fills the Void" created,
by a federal government now shut down,
he inspires all of the nation's masses,
now seen on television in every large and small town.

He devotedly respects our beloved veterans,
and this country they have served so well,
yet the authorities ask him to stop his work,

The Cumberland Times News reports that eight bath salts incidents in the city since June and an average of one case per day being treated at the emergency department of the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center has caused alarm for officials throughout the community. Like synthetic marijuana known commonly as “spice” or “k2” these products are commonly sold over the counter locally as those producing the drugs are staying one step ahead of the law by constantly altering the chemicals. While the effects can prove devastating- Cumberland Police Chief Charles Hinnant says unfortunately until more concrete, wider ranging laws are on the books- there is little that can be done by law enforcement…

I just read this this morning and found it quite useful and informative.

The others I will share are one, a petition I made to sign for ongoing legislation and support, and two, a facebook group I started to help use our collective voice to rid these substances in our comunitty.
Please I urge you to each sign the petition and secondly join th efacebook group and ask all of your friends, or invite them, to join as well.

The facebook group is founded locally however, I would like to see citizens from all over The United States join the group so we can collectively have a forum in which to discuss strategies and ways to properly organize and help outlaw these drugs as well as, in the mean time before new legislation, discuss strategies to boycott and legally pressure local businesses to stop selling this garbage to our citizens.

Anyone who joins and "likes" the page can help identify all the local businesses that are selling either the Bath Salts or Legal Weed and then we can address those bussiness establishments perhaps through liscening, boycotts, civil suits, etc.

The idea is to gather a consensus of the comunitty to brainstorm and discuss ideas that will effectively and legally stop the sale of these chemical compounds as well as educate the local comunitty about the inherent dangers, sypmtoms of use/abuse, and treatment.

I am glad to see you covering topics with weight here on WCBC...thanks for helping to keep our community informed.

Here is a link article at my blog that has unfortunately been read more often in a month, then what I had published at The United States Department of Energy nearly two years ago. (you may have to copy and paste it into your browser)

I hope you will share this so that others may be made aware of the exact confounding issue these chemicals cause be it in legislative measures that are difficult to pass and then enforce due to the chemistry itself of these compounds, as well as the dire circumstances and ultimately death these new designer drugs can be attributed to.

Ultimately it is education, awareness, and voicing our dis-pleasures with these compounds in our communities that are tearing families apart and adding fuel to the criminal issues right here at home, much less across our great nation.

"Ban Bath Salts and Legal Weed" ~ Facebook Group for Everyone to Join

Please join our group founded on August 14, 2012 in Cumberland, maryland.

This is an initiative to help outlaw the sale of Bath Salts and legal Weed in our local comunitty, our county, our state, and eventually our nation as well as ban the import and sales of the chemical compounds that make up these new classes of designer drugs.

Simultaneous to the Project Fit kickoff, Dr. George Garrow, Chief Medical Officer for WMHS, was hosting about a 150 people at a forum on Bath Salts. The panel that he assembled was excellent and the program was extremely informative, as well as, very well received by all attendees. Physicians, nurses, other staff, Health Department. employees, community counselors, prison officials and others were in attendance. Between comments from yesterday's audience and very positive postings on Facebook, the demand for additional sessions on this topic is great. WMHS will hold another forum next month. After the lunchtime forum, there was then a special training session for law enforcement on Bath Salts. Law enforcement officers from Cumberland, the Sheriff's Office, the State Police and other jurisdictions were in attendance. That session was also well received.

Because of the seriousness of the Bath Salts issue, WMHS will remain in the forefront of increased community awareness, community education, education of professionals and certainly caring for patients who fall victim to a bath salts overdose. Our ultimate goal is to have our youth as well as our adult population focus on more health and wellness related activities such as Project Fit so there is no longer an interest in or a market for head shops selling Bath Salts.

There was a great article in yesterday's Cumberland Times News about the bath salts epidemic facing our community.

This week the Western Maryland Health System is sponsoring a community wide presentation on the bath salts issue.

The program is open to physicians, nurses, social workers, school nurses, principals and corrections staff.

Dr. George Garrow, Chief Medical Officer for WMHS, will present along with our Trauma Nurse Coordinator, Chuck Barrick; Dr. Christine Lee, a WMHS staff Psychiatrist; Rebecca Myers, Program Director for the Health Department's Outpatient Addictions; and Capt. James Pyles, Maryland State Police.

There will be a case presentation, a review of the growing incidents as a result of bath salts and the impact on the ED, review of clinical issues related to bath salts and Q&A for attendees.

Following the community wide presentation is a similar presentation for 30 members of area law enforcement.

A training session will be held with some of the same panel expertise that participated in the community wide meeting.

This epidemic is spreading with overdoses related to bath salts being seen in our ED each day.

Bath Salts: The New Drug of Choice

Now these are not the kind of bath salts that one can buy at Bath and Body Works; they are synthetic drugs that can be purchased legally over the counter. They are chemicals that look like cocaine, but are not intended for human consumption; however, they are being sold as such and have become the new drug of choice. They are legal because as soon as the main ingredients are banned by law, the manufacturers in Pakistan, Afghanistan and other such countries change one molecule or compound and the ingredient can be called something else. There is no dosage and for $20 you can get high for a day, three days, end up in the Emergency Room, in the Intensive Care Unit or dead. You can smoke it, snort it, inject it, insert it rectally or swallow it.

The WMHS ED is averaging two overdoses per day as these have a profound effect on the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. We have had patients end up in ICU, near death as a result of the synthetic drug or their actions while in an enraged state resulting from the drug. We have had teenagers, pregnant moms and even a grandmother in the ED due to an overdose. We have had a 130-pound young man who overdosed on bath salts and in such a rage that he jumped through glass windows of the homes of strangers; it took three large men to subdue him then transport him to the hospital.

A new bath salts convenience store recently opened about two miles from my house so I ride by it every day. Each time, day or night, the parking lot is almost full. Their patrons are of all ages, sizes, shapes and colors. Even the County Sheriff went in uniform and purchased bath salts to prove a point. We have to figure out a way to get the message out as to the dangers associated with bath salts and other synthetic drugs without introducing young unassuming teens with an insatiable curiosity to this newly crowned drug of choice.

Each article is independntly about important issues, but obviously what peole prefer to read is about the pressing and very threatening issue of bath salts in particular often overlooking the equal threat that legal weed (a.k.a. potpourri) carries.

I have also started a petition to raise awareness and help outlaw these dangerous chemical compounds.

The major emphasis has been on bath salts, however please do not overlook the legal weed, as it can and often does have the exact same chemicals in the multitude of brands and blends as well.

These chemicals are often in the cannabinoids family tree, the Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) family tree, and the amphetamine family tree.

Here is perhaps another frightening facet of this muti faceted issue.

The raw chemicals, which are very inexpensive and, as reportded by Dateline NBC, can garner profits that are unbelievable and are easily ordered and shipped right to a manufacturers or private individuals door.

I think a much larger emphasis needs to be placed on shutting down these sites immediatelly and also making it illegal to purchase any of these chemicals or compounds outside of perhaps an authorized research lab.

Certainly no individual private citizen needs these chemicals or compounds for any useful purpose.

My blog goes into much greater detail about the "science" behind the chemistry that is being utilized to skirt around the laws that have been passed thus far in various localitie, states, and federal law as well, and it also covers different initiatives that are transpiring right now in different many different jurisditions.

I am pleased to see a lot of news coverage, and that this coverage is increasing as well makes me feel better to know that these issues are being very closely scrutinized and in the forefront of the public's and government's concerns.

I have researched this topic for several years now and finally decided it was high time to write about it and expose what I have learned thus far from my collective data gathering.

It is obvious to any rational citizen that these chemicals compounds are sold only for greed and profit.

It is equally obvious to the sellers that the people making these purchases of these extremely dangerous chemicals are consuming them in any number of methods, and are most certainly not using them as a "potpourri" (one false pretense in their promoton) or as actual "bath salts" we have come to know, such as epsom salts(promotional mis-leading propaganda again), but on the other hand these purchasers and users have only the intent on using them to get "high", and we have all seen in the news what the effects these chemicals have upon the users, the families and the innocent, as people are dying across the country and comittig crimes at an increasingly break neck speed, and most unfortuantely it is too often our promising curious young children and youtful adults that suffer the greatest peril.

It is so higly profitable that it is hard for some of our own local businesses to do what is morally right and simply stop indiscriminately dispensing this throughout our comunitty.

I always do my best to take action and also use words to communicate the truth of any situation at hand, and in this case what is happening now today here and abroad are true atrocities.

I earned a Sceince Degree with a Major in Police Science, and this epidemic that is quickly growing out of control reminds me far too much of the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980's I studied whle in college, as well as the ongoing crytal meth issues we are also in the throes of combating.

We also have a serious heroin problem in this community, as well as a plethora of legal pharmaceuticals that are dispensed at the many pharmacies in town to patrons, some of which finds its way into the black market as well, because whe there exists a demand, unfortunately a supply will follow, as will the criminal element and the violence that it brings along with it.

What ultimately concerns me more then anything it the resultant effect upon the user, and ultimately the victims to be, as the mixture of any of a number of these drugs together and their resulting exponential effects are just so unpredictable, while the quantity of all of these drugs is so readily available.

Rumor has it that one shop in town distributing, at least, legal weed, if not both LW and BS, was grossing $ 28,000 per month in sales.

Again that is a rumor, but I do not think that is too far fetched by any stretch of the imagination.

$ 1000 per day selling small packaged quantities at $ 25 -$35 each would be quite an easy number to achieve in gross sales.

I despise these chemicals and the companies that produce them as well as the local businesses that are selling this garbage at a huge cost and ultimate burden to our local citizens.

I also despise what it is doing to the already delicate fabric of our community, and again equally despise when I go to some of my favorite hiking areas or overlooks and see empty packages of this garbage littered about.

For example, just a few short days ago while taking my dog for a ride and run up to Iron's Mountain, there were four empty packages where I usualy take breathtaking pictures of the mountains at sunrise, or butterflys and bees pollenating blossoming puprple thistle, or yellow finches perched on branches or deer running in the now defunct orchards.

It appears that most of the folks using these sinister heinous chemical compounds buy more then one bag at a time (because there are price breaks for purchasing quantity), and many folks become highly addicted very quickly and are often observed waiting for the store(s) to open each morning as their cravings are that strong.

Again, my blog goes into greater detail about these, as well as other particulars, and it is well worth reading.

I do hope you explore the contents there and check it often for the many updates I add each week to stay abreast of this distressing topic.

My objective is to get as many signatures I can on the petition, as well as many members of the page on facebook, and a lot of local support is wonderful, but, as this is a nationwide and even international issue now, I invite anyone to join in on this crusade to make these chemical compounds illegal in any and all forms at all, as well as any chemical compounds in the same or similar family tree of chemical genetics, if you will.

Perhaps the most important primary objective is seeking treatment for those that are using and abusing these substances, as well as knowing how to spot the symptoms of the abuse.

Education in the comunitty starting with the family and then a properly coordinated effort for testing (when available) and treatment, and perhaps most especially and immediatelly, boycotting these local immoral businesses that are operating on the pretense of free enterprise is the onus upon us now, lest this problem will certainly just explode into a larger problem maybe even quite a bit more unmanageable at a later time.

I would like to challenge the local citizens, the local news paper, the local radio stations, and other media outlets as well as local businesses and even government to take out an advertisement, or publish website, and list and expose all the businesses in and around town or anywhere in our vicinity, that are selling any of this garbage, so we may all be aware of who it is that is preying upon our comunitty.

I urge any leadership as well as readership in any locations that reads this article to do the same, as being proactive, and thus preventing problems, is a much better solution then waiting for the problems already at hand to further proliferate.

That may sound radical at first, however, the businesses selling these drugs should certainly be made public knowledge at the very least, and should also easily be accessible in one location in a simple list form for anyone to investigate so we can further raise awareness for parents, family, friends, politicians, law enforcemnet, ad infinitum, as well as use our voice to demand these businesses to do the right thing, or we will no longer support them.

Just go where this garbage is sold and see who "lurks" around these places, then ask yourself is that who you would like near your childrens' bus stop or school?

Speaking of schools, I know for a fact that a few places that sell this are in very close proximity to schools and I state that only because I find it as just another great concern.

I hope that each of you will sign the petition I have started, as many have already done.

I have had some great feedback from some public officials, and I have heard nothing nor seen signatures from quite a few others.

Is there any real reason to not sign a simple petition that promotes a better comunitty by reducing the sale of such salacious substances?

I hope that we can stand together united as one strong comunitty that will not tolerate these businesses or substances and the dire effect that they are wreaking upon us already, and signing a petition and writing letters to your local and state, and federal officials is one way to le everyone know whwre you stand.

Perhaps you will personally choose to not sign the petition or participate in a meaningful way to rid our city of this problem that will only continue to grow, and to not act at all in the face of this current nightmare would be, and is certainly, shameful.

Please also read the blog article (link above) and it's many related links so that you may fully grasp what we are actually up against be it legally, in either a civil or criminal perspective, logistically concerning health, crisis management, treatment, symptoms, the uptick in crime, or any other of a number of factors.

Lastly please join the facebook page, as well and share it and invite your friends to join too, so that we may display our collective support and demand very swift and decisive legislation immediatelly.

If you have read this far, I appreciate your individual time and thought about this issue and I hope that you will join the rest of us and use your voice as we organize to outlaw this garbage and prevent what otherwise will happen if we choose to rest on our collective laurels.

Congressman Jim Moran is currently serving his eleventh term as U.S. Representative from Virginia’s 8th District, comprised of the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, Arlington County, and portions of Fairfax County, including Lee District, Mason District, Providence District, Mt. Vernon District and Reston.

My Petition:

A simple straight forward petition, please forgive a few typos I have since corrected herein.

We met long ago at The Alexandria's Eagles Club and I thank you for a great evening of pool and personal politics that was candid and endearing.

Please also Google; (HRDC Swygert) this is an article I had, surprisingly, printed there (at their web site) with great honor and I beleive set the tone for what is transpiring today.

I respect your opinion and initiatives and at a time said I would never vote for you, as I was then a much more conservative republican, however, at 44, I find more and more that I appreciate your dedication and servitude and often feel less and less indifference then I did at one time.

I do reside in Cumberland, Maryland now, however, I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and I reach out to you with respect and the hope of your:

1) support on my petition and

2) advice or critique on my United States Department of Energy article.

My sincere best to you and yours, and if you can pass this petition along to your colleagues as you nce did some other ideas I had long ago that you wrote me back a very candid and eye opening letter about, I would, of course, even apprciate it more.

I am but a single citizen, however I work hard through thes tough times with a broken back none the less, to stand for what i beleive in and make my voice heard and count on support of fine outsdtanding men like yourself.

I published this on May 29, 2012, however I have researched this phenomena for over a year because I am acutely aware of the science of these compounds and the immoral ways these companies manufacturing these chemical compounds simply design new synthetic compounds with similar molecular footprints which are yet outlawed to skirt the laws.

My proposition will be that any compound that is in the same molecular family chemical's genetic tree shall be outlawed.

I hope to hear back from you and what your thoughts are and also please offer my name to anyone you come across tat may be looking for help on this issue.

My article has a plethora of facts, links, and observations that are all excellent resources, as I have tried to make one source that is conclusive and convincing to any reader so that each will understand this multi-faceted legal and social problem.

I have been researching and writing on this topic quite a bit before it hit national headlines, and my blog on this particular topic (which I left the link for above) has been read, unfortunately, much more often then my article that was printed at The United States Department of Energy. I have seen the devastating effects first hand and find these compounds personally despicable.

I Have a Science Degree with a Major in Police Science, and these type of articles of interest I just cannot ignore.
